A woman was waiting at an airport one night, with several long hours before her flight. She hunted for a book in the airport shop, bought a bag of cookies and found a place to drop.
She was engrossed in her book, but happened to see. That the man beside her, as bold as could be, grabbed a cookie or two from the bag between, which she tried to ignore, to avoid a scene.
She read, munched cookies and watched the clock, as the gutsy “cookie thief” diminished her stock. She was getting more irritated as the minutes ticked by, thinking, “If I wasn’t so nice, I’d blacken his eye!”
With each cookie she took, he took one, too. When only one was left, she wondered what he’d do. With a smile on his face and a nervous laugh, he took the last cookie and broke it in half. He offered her half, as he ate the other. She snatched it from him and thought, “Oh brother, this guy has some nerve, and he’s also rude. Why, he didn’t even show any gratitude!”
She had never known when she had been so galled, and sighed with relief when her flight was called. She gathered her belongings and headed for the gate, refusing to look back at the “thieving ingrate.” She boarded the plane and sank in her seat, then sought her book, which was almost complete. As she reached in her baggage, she gasped with surprise. There was her bag of cookies in front of her eyes! “If mine are here,” she moaned with despair, “then the other were his and he tried to share!”
Too late to apologize, she realized with grief that she was the rude one, the ingrate, the thief!

Kẻ trộm bánh qui
Một người phụ nữ đợi ở phi trường trong một đêm nọ, mấy giờ đồng hồ nữa mới đến chuyến bay của cô. Cô kiếm một quyển sách từ một cửa hiệu trong nhà ga cùng một gói bánh quy, rồi cô tìm một nơi thả người xuống.
Bị cuốn hút vào nội dung quyển sách, chợt tình cờ cô bắt gặp, một gã đang ngồi bên cạnh cô, thật trơ trẽn, chụp lấy một hai chiếc trong gói bánh qui đặt giữa hai người. Để tránh làm to chuyện, cô giả vờ như không thấy.
Cô vừa đọc, vừa nhai bánh qui và canh đồng hồ trong khi “tên trộm bánh qui” lì lợm vẫn không ngừng làm hao hụt kho dự trữ của cô. Từng phút trôi qua càng khó chịu hơn, cô nghĩ bụng “nếu ta không tử tế, ta đã đấm cho hắn vỡ mặt!”
Cứ cô lấy một chiếc thì hắn cũng lấy một chiếc. Đến chiếc cuối cùng, cô tự hỏi để xem hắn sẽ làm gì. Hắn nhoẻn miệng rồi cười to gượng gạo, hắn lấy chiếc bánh cuối cùng bẻ ra làm đôi. Hắn ăn nốt một nửa và đưa cô nửa kia. Cô giật phắt miếng bánh trên tay hắn và nghĩ bụng “Ơ hay, gã này cả gan và thô lỗ thật. Sao hắn thậm chí chẳng tỏ ra một chút hàm ơn nào vậy!”
Bất giác cô lặng đi vì cảm thấy bị xúc phạm, cho đến khi cô nghe người ta thông báo chuyến bay của cô, cô mới thở dài nhẹ nhõm. Cô gom hết đồ đạc và hướng về phía cửa lên máy bay không thèm nhìn lại “tên trộm vô ơn”. Cô vào khoang máy bay, yên vị, lục tìm quyển sách đã đọc gần xong. Khi tay cô chạm vào trong hành lý, cô há hốc vì kinh ngạc. Trước mắt cô là gói bánh qui! “Nếu đây là của mình,” cô thất vọng than thở, “thì gói kia là của hắn và hắn đã cố gắng chia sẻ!”
Quá muộn để nói lời xin lỗi. Cô hối hận nhận ra rằng chính cô mới là kẻ thô lỗ, kẻ vô ơn, kẻ trộm.
