THE STORY OF A WOODCUTTER

Once upon a time, a very strong woodcutter asked for a job in a timber merchant and he got it. The pay was really good and so was the work condition. For those reasons, the woodcutter was determined to do his best.

His boss gave him an axe and showed him the area where he supposed to work.

The first day, the woodcutter brought 18 trees.

“Congratulations,” the boss said. “Go on that way!”

Very motivated by the boss words, the woodcutter tried harder the next day, but he could only bring 15 trees. The third day he tried even harder, but he could only bring 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees.

“I must be losing my strength”, the woodcutter thought. He went to the boss and apologized, saying that he could not understand what was going on.

“When was the last time you sharpened your axe?” the boss asked.

“Sharpen? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut trees…”

CÂU CHUYỆN VỀ ANH THỢ ĐỐN GỖ

Thuở xưa, có một anh thợ đốn gỗ khỏe mạnh đến xin việc làm ở chỗ một nhà buôn gỗ và anh được nhận vào làm. Tiền trả công rất hậu hĩnh và điều kiện làm việc rất tốt. Vì vậy, anh thợ tự nhủ sẽ làm việc hết sức mình.

Ông chủ trao cho anh một chiếc rìu và chỉ cho anh khu vực nơi anh sẽ làm việc.

Ngày đầu tiên anh thợ hạ được 18 cây.

“Xin chúc mừng anh,” ông chủ nói. “Cứ tiếp tục như thế nhé!”

Được động viên bởi lời khen ngợi của ông chủ, ngày hôm sau anh thợ cố gắng hơn, nhưng anh chỉ có thể hạ được 15 cây. Ngày thứ ba anh thậm chí cố gắng hơn nữa, nhưng anh chỉ có thể đốn được 10 cây. Ngày qua ngày anh thợ đốn được càng lúc càng ít cây hơn.

“Chắc là sức lực của mình đang mất dần rồi”, anh thợ đốn gỗ nghĩ. Anh đi gặp ông chủ và xin thứ lỗi, nói rằng anh không thể hiểu sao lại như thế.

“Lần cuối cùng anh mài lưỡi rìu là khi nào?” ông chủ hỏi.

“Mài rìu ư? tôi không có thì giờ để mài rìu. Tôi đốn cây bận bù đầu bù cổ…”
